My Math Assistant

My Math Assistant

Hey, friends! You probably have questions about Saxon Math, and you’re probably wondering about the amount of time you’ll have to dedicate to implement Saxon in your homeschool. I’ve answered the 7 Most Common Questions from Homeschoolers about Saxon Math previously. And as for wondering about the time requirement — did you know that you can hire your very own math assistant?

Well, you could, but that would cost you a fortune. Luckily, there is something similar that won’t cost you an arm and leg. It’s called ‘My Math Assistant’, and it will make your job so much easier!

I had no idea it existed before Ken, the creator, emailed me and asked if I wanted to try it out and possibly review it. His offer couldn’t have come at a better time! I am swamped this week with last minute preparations for a month-long family trip to China. I’ve been so busy that I’ve been having my kiddos correct their own math, and I’m sure you can imagine how well that goes, lol!

My Math Assistant is pretty brilliant. Ken, a homeschooling dad, actually created it for his own family. Let me tell you how it works.

How ‘My Math Assistant’ Works

First, sign up for your free trial with just your email. The system will create a dashboard for you, as the mom/administrator. It’s easy and intuitive to add each of your children to your dashboard so they can log in with their own emails.

Next, input each child’s course. Then click on the highlighted course title to input the problem set your child is currently on, unless you’re starting a brand new course at problem set 1, which is the automatic setting.

You’re all set! ‘My Math Assistant’ will send you an email tutorial, if you have any questions. There’s also a help button on the top menu bar. It’s so intuitive, though, that you likely won’t have any.

As soon as your dashboard is set up, your children can begin to use My Math Assistant. They just log in and enter the answers to the problems. If the answer is correct, the box is green. Incorrect answers are red. Your child can immediately rework the problem, or he can click a button to submit the problem to your for help.

You’ll receive an email for each problem set your child completes. The email will contain a list of problems on which your child requested help and a list of problems which too your child more than 1 try to get right. That way, you’ll know what he’s struggling with.

‘My Math Assistant’ Makes Saxon Implementation Easy

This is really a great little tool for Saxon parents who can’t be at their child’s beck and call! There’s no more waiting for mom (or dad) to finally get around to checking assignments!

Having assignments checked immediately like this increases the likelihood that incorrect problems will be corrected. That’s where the most valuable learning takes place!

I just cringe at the way I learned math in public school. Our teacher would teach us a concept at the blackboard, which I’d tune out because I’m a more visual and kinesthetic learner. Then we’d complete the day’s assignment. Then we’d all pass our assignments to the person seated behind us.

The teacher would call out the answers and we’d grade each other’s assignments. We would then call out our scores, one by one, to the teacher, who would write them in her grade book. And then we’d all file out the door to our next class, dropping our assignments into the trash can on the way.

What a bizarre waste of time and effort!

Who cares about what you can already do correctly? Correcting the mistakes is where the real learning happens! And it’s critical that conceptual mistakes be corrected before the next problem set, when problems are increasingly complex, or we start getting mistakes on top of mistakes.

That’s where a piece of software like ‘My Math Assistant’ is invaluable. Mistakes are caught and corrected immediately. Even when mom is busy and not available, which is all too often around here, unfortunately.

‘My Math Assistant’ also automatically administers tests and calculates scores to simplify the assessment and grading process. I’ve never previously administered tests, because I could see each day where my kiddos lacked understanding and I could help them rectify their mistakes. But I can see how it would be useful!
